Bryan Leaw
Dr Leaw is a neuroscientist who recently joined Professor Euan Wallace’s research group at The Hudson Institute of Medical Ressearch, after completing his PhD in October 2014. Dr Leaw won numerous awards during his scientific studies, with his PhD thesis being ranked top in the Dept. of Anatomy & Neurosience and subsequently nominated for the Chancellor’s Prize in PhD Excellence. He was also awarded the Harold Mitchell Fellowship, the prestigious state-level Dowd Foundation Research Scholarship, the Richard Larkins Award for being the top honours student in his department, and was on the Dean’s Honours List. Dr Leaw published 4 papers during his PhD, which culminated in publications in prestigious journals such as Brain and Human Molecular Genetics. His translational top-down approach using animal models of childhood genetic epilepsy resulted in the discovery of a novel anti-epileptic drug, which specifically targeted the underlying molecular pathways leading to disease and halted seizures. This drug is now being pushed towards a small clinical trial at Austin Health. Dr Leaw is continuing this approach at the Ritchie Centre, where he is currently working on assessing the neuroprotective potential of human amnion epithelial cells (hAECs) in a mouse model of bronchopulmonary dysplasia.
